ANYTIME FITNESS MENS 5 A SIDE PREMIER LEAGUE COMPETITION
It’s been a high energy season in the Anytime Fitness Mens 5 a side Premier League here at Soccer5s! We have seen a number of teams battle it out to claim the title of best of the best and claim the $5000 prize offered up by Anytime Fitness!
The Kings took out last season’s grand final, making it their 3rd in as many years, and returned this season to defend their title and try take out a fourth. This season saw The Kings take out the Minor Premiership undefeated and the $2500 cheque that came with it. These boys have been unstoppable all season and were favourites to take out grand final.
The semi final saw The Kings take on the CCU 1st team and their fellow Central Coast United team mates, whom they defeated 6-4 in a tough battle. The other semi final saw other competition favourites Norfolk take on Matty Crowell’s The Wannabe’s. Despite being the underdogs Crowell’s team defeated Norfolk in a 7-4 upset, and sent themselves to the big match.
The grand final saw the undefeated Kings against the underdog Wannabe’s. Youth and speed versus experience. CCU General Manager and ex-Socceroo versus CCU 1st Grade boys. The stage was set. The competition fierce. The spectators ready. The referee blew his whistle and the game was on, these boys weren’t mucking around. The Wannabe’s were the first to hit the back of the net through Dean Heffernan, taking the lead 1-0. However, The Kings kept their cool and soon struck back through a Geordie Howe specialty. It was a low scoring game with some incredible defence and saves made by both keepers. As time wound down, things got heated.
Both of these teams wanted the glory, the prize money and the bragging rights over the others. Dean Heffernan was the man who would break the tie and score the inevitable winner. The full-time whistle blew and the Wannabe’s had done it. 2-1. They had slayed the Kings and ended their winning streak, taking out the $2500 grand final prize in the process. After 5 long years, Matty Crowell had finally done it. He’d finally won a grand final- and he’s making sure everyone knows about it!
Another huge thank you to Anytime Fitness for sponsoring our Mens 5 a side Premier League competition!
